Dairy farming is a tough occupation. The dairy farmers have to work very hard to get a profit. So today we will be talking about a miraculous meal “Silage", which could be helpful for our farmer friends as this meal is highly nutritious and it can provide with a great increment in the productivity.

Silage is a kind of fodder that is manufactured from green foliage crops by preserving these crops through fermentation. Now there are different kinds of silage produced which have different kind of nutritional factors but one thing which all of them have in common is that they all are highly nutritious and are guaranteed to provide an increment in productivity.

• Sugarcane silage- As the name suggests it is manufactured from sugarcane, it can be fed to cows, buffaloes, and bulls. If we talk about its nutritional values then it has a dry matter of 32%, C.P. of 7%, ADF of 30-40%, NDF of 40-60%, and 30-40% S Sugarcane silage is very easy to digest for the cattle.
• Corn silage- It is manufactured from corn by fermenting the crop. It is considered the best option for increasing the productivity of cattle as it is very high in energy and can be easily digested. It has very high nutritional values.
• Wheat silage- This is yet another kind of silage made out of wheat. It is also a high energy-providing protein-rich source of nutrition available at decent prices, it is very much similar to the alfalfa haylage also the wheat silage has a low fiber content so it’s easy to digest.

These were some of the best silages. Now some other important things about silages are –

1. They have quite a long shelf life, almost 18 months.
2. They are a kind of instant and ready to use product, which means you won’t need to do much hard work you have to just buy them open the packing, and feed them to your cattle.

While buying silage one should look for these qualities-

1. It should have less fiber content so that it’s easy for the cattle to digest.
2. Its packaging should be of good quality to ensure long shelf life.
